Dreaming Forward with Kate Yeager

In an inspiring display of creativity and empowerment, the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit (MCIU) recently partnered with Nashville-based pop singer-songwriter Kate Yeager to bring a message of self-expression and the power of sharing your story with local students. The collaboration took place during the third of four gatherings at MCIU’s Dreaming Forward student event, which serves as a platform to elevate the voices of students from 13 participating local districts across Montgomery County.

The Dreaming Forward initiative, designed to support high school students in finding their leadership voice to impact change in their spaces, provides a unique opportunity for participants to connect with their peers from differing backgrounds while exploring self-awareness, responsibility, and impactful decision-making themes. These gatherings are instrumental in helping students build essential skills for high school and beyond, including leadership, empathy, and a sense of community.

Kate Yeager, known for her raw, emotional vocals and lyrics that tackle universal themes of belonging, vulnerability, and love, shared her personal journey with the students, reflecting on how her breakout song, Fat, which went viral, became a pivotal moment in her career. Yeager spoke about her realization: when shared openly through storytelling, vulnerability connects individuals and can change perspectives and shape communities. She explained that sharing our stories opens doors to deeper understanding and connection, encouraging the students to recognize the importance of their voices in building stronger school communities.

The students’ response was overwhelmingly positive, with many sharing how the experience deepened their understanding of the power of storytelling. One student remarked, “She really opened up a new segment and allowed us to sit there and process through her lyrics and understand them without her having to explain them. Phenomenal.”

Another student shared, “It fortified the importance of storytelling and the impact that stories have on changing or supporting people’s perspectives.” For many, the event sparked deeper reflections on the role of self-belief and authenticity in fostering a sense of belonging. “They sparked me to realize that you have to believe you’re good enough because no one else will. And in doing so, your circle of belongingness will form around that,” said one participant.

Through her discussion of personal stories and the connections they create, Kate inspired students to see storytelling as a tool that goes beyond words, taking various forms and mediums to connect individuals. As one student noted, “It made me realize that sharing your story can come in different formats, and sharing your experience allows you to connect with others.”

“We are so grateful for Kate Yeager’s participation, as her story reminds our students that no matter where they come from or what they’ve experienced, their voices are powerful agents for change.” Jesse Gluckman, one of the many organizers of the event, shared.

The Dreaming Forward event is just one example of how the MCIU is prioritizing the development of young leaders who are equipped to navigate the complexities of today’s world with empathy, respect, and responsibility.  By offering students the chance to interact with inspirational figures like Yeager and engage in meaningful discussions, MCIU is laying the foundation for a future where all students feel seen, heard, and empowered to create positive change. MCIU fosters a sense of unity and shared purpose among the next generation of leaders by creating opportunities for young people to meet and collaborate.
