Early experiences with counting form the foundation for a lifetime of number sense. Let’s learn how to teach children to count with deep understanding. The Counting on Number Sense workshop begins by exploring how you can teach children to count while building number sense. We then consider some of the early pitfalls in learning to count and what you can do about them. Next, we learn how children can know how many without counting. From there, we look at how to know if your students really understand how many there are. We then discuss how you can help children learn larger numbers. Finally, we unpack how you can apply everything learned in the workshop to your classroom and beyond. When we have a deep understanding of the complexities involved in counting, we learn how to teach our students with understanding. We can count on developing number sense for our students.
