Lexia English is designed for students in K-6, but can be used with older students. They should be informed that the program will support their speaking and listening of English and will require some repetition in order to do so.

You can also encourage them to take ownership of their learning by explaining that the characters at each level are much like them and each of them has a favorite content area. Allowing them to get to know the characters and identify those they may relate to based on their home country or their hobbies, for example, engages older students. You can let them know that they will encounter all of these characters at several points in the program. They can also choose characters based on their favorite content areas. They will have to engage with all characters before progressing to the next level but allowing them choice in getting there may help.

Each Lexia lesson has a corresponding slide deck. While you may or may not want to use the slide deck in its entirety for older students, you can edit them as you wish to incorporate relevant vocabulary and clip art that the students may be using in other parts of their day, as well as using single slides as flash cards or conversational starters to facilitate peer-to-peer and student-to-teacher conversations.
