Helping Every Learner Navigate, Interact, and Participate
If you haven’t explored the Operable principle yet, start with the previous post on Operable. Once content is perceivable, the next step is ensuring learners can actually interact with it. Below are practical strategies you can use to make your content more operable for every learner.
Make Your Content Keyboard Accessible
Not every learner uses a mouse or touchscreen to navigate digital content. Some rely entirely on keyboards, switch devices, or assistive technology that mimics keyboard input.
Test your content using only a keyboard.
Try navigating your LMS page, slideshow, form, or website using the Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, and arrow keys.
Check that:

- The focus indicator is visible as you move
- Interactive elements work without a mouse

Avoid keyboard traps.
Learners should be able to move into and back out of all interactive elements, such as embedded tools, videos, or forms.

Give Learners Enough Time
Once learners can navigate content, the next barrier is often time. Digital learning environments can move quickly, but not every learner processes information at the same pace.
Avoid unnecessary time limits.
If timed activities are required, provide extended time options whenever possible.
Pause or stop moving content.
Avoid auto-advancing slides, countdown timers, or scrolling announcements that learners cannot control.
Give learners control over media.
Videos, animations, and audio should include pause, play, and volume controls.
Provide clear instructions upfront.
When learners know what to expect, they can better manage their time and attention.
Flexible timing benefits many learners, including students with processing differences, multilingual learners, and anyone working in distracting environments.
Reduce Distractions and Cognitive Overload
Operable design is not only about physical access; it is also about making interaction manageable and predictable.
Keep navigation consistent.
Menus, buttons, and layouts should stay in familiar locations throughout a course or website.
Break large tasks into smaller sections.
Long pages or assignments can feel overwhelming. Use headings, spacing, and chunked instructions to support focus.
Avoid unnecessary motion or flashing.
Rapid flashing content can trigger physical reactions for some users and distract many others.
Limit clutter.
Too many buttons, pop-ups, or competing visuals can make it difficult for learners to focus on what matters most.
Simple, predictable design helps learners spend less energy figuring out how to use the content and more energy engaging with the learning itself.
Help learners navigate with confidence
Learners should always know:

This supports screen reader navigation and helps all learners scan content quickly.
Organize materials in a logical order.
Keep weekly modules, assignments, and resources structured consistently.

Design for multiple ways to interact.

When learners can move through content independently and predictably, they spend less time troubleshooting and more time learning, engaging, and demonstrating what they know.

A good place to begin is by reviewing one frequently used lesson or activity for keyboard access, navigation, and timing. Small, thoughtful adjustments can make a meaningful difference in how learners experience your content.
