Helping Every Learner Understand, Predict, and Successfully Use Digital Content

Once learners can perceive content and interact with it, there is another important question to ask:

Can every learner understand what the content means and what they are expected to do?

This is where Understandable, the U in POUR, comes in.

What does “Understandable” Mean?

Understandable content is designed so that information, instructions, and interactions are clear and predictable. Learners should not have to spend unnecessary effort figuring out what something means, where to go next, or what they are supposed to do.

Consider learners who:

      • Have cognitive or learning disabilities
      • Are multilingual learners
      • Use screen readers or other assistive technology
      • Have difficulty with attention, memory, or processing
      • Are unfamiliar with the content or digital tool
      • Benefit from clear routines, directions, and predictable layouts

WCAG organizes Understandable into the following four key guideline areas:

      • Readable (3.1): Content should use clear, understandable language, and the language of the page should be identified so assistive technology can present it correctly.
      • Predictable (3.2): Pages, navigation, and interactive elements should work in consistent and expected ways.
      • Input assistance (3.3): When learners enter information or make a mistake, they should receive clear instructions and helpful feedback to understand and correct the problem.

The heart of this principle is simple: Learners should be able to focus their energy on learning, not on figuring out how the content works.

What Understandable Looks Like in Education

In educational settings, understandable design shows up in practical, everyday ways:

      • Assignment directions clearly explain what students need to do and how to submit their work.
      • Headings and labels use familiar, descriptive language rather than vague phrases.
      • Courses and digital materials use consistent navigation and organization.
      • Forms clearly identify required information and explain how to correct an error.
      • Links and buttons tell learners what will happen when they select them.
      • Instructions break complex tasks into clear, manageable steps.

Imagine a student opening an online assignment and seeing several links, unfamiliar icons, a long paragraph of directions, and a button labeled simply “Click Here.” The student may understand the academic content perfectly but still struggle to figure out what to do next.

That confusion creates a barrier that has nothing to do with whether the student understands the lesson.

Making content understandable does not mean removing complexity from learning. It means removing unnecessary complexity from the way learners access that learning.

When expectations, language, navigation, and feedback are clear and predictable, learners can spend less time figuring out the digital environment and more time engaging with the content and demonstrating what they know.
